Baroness Orczy (Mrs Montague Barstow) was born in Hungary in 1865 and lived from the age of 15 in London. She achieved fame with her romantic novel THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (1905), the story of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, a band of Englishmen pledged to rescue the innocent victims of the Reign of Terror in Paris. The success of the novel was followed by a dramatized version, written in collaboration with her husband. It was performed to great acclaim in London. She wrote many other historical and romantic novels, including several sequels to THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL. |
