‘Sapper’ was the pseudonym of Herman Cyril McNeile, born in 1888. He was the creator of Hugh ‘Bulldog’ Drummond, the hefty, ugly, charming, xenophobic, and apparently brainless British ex-army officer who foils the activities of an international crook. He appears in BULLDOG DRUMMOND (1920), THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES and many other popular thrillers. After McNeile’s death in 1937 the series continued under the same pseudonym by G T Fairlie.
